Money In Midnight Madness

Finished 92nd in the 1,839-man field in Full Tilt's $10+1 Midnight Madness MTT. I was all set to go real deep, sitting at a comfortable 15 blinds with a good feel for my table, when this monstrosity of a hand happened:

600/1200 Ante 150
Seat 1: J_HasTheNuts (17 614)
Seat 9: Hero (19 331)
-- clip antes
Hero posts the small blind of 600
J_HasTheNuts posts the big blind of 1,200
The button is in seat #8

Holecards:
Dealt to Hero [ ]
-- folds around to me in sb
Hero raises to 4,800
J_HasTheNuts calls 3,600

Flop:
[ ]
Hero has 15 seconds left to act
Hero bets 6 000
J_HasTheNuts raises to 12 664 and is all in
Hero calls 6 664
J_HasTheNuts shows [ ]
Hero shows [ ]

Turn :
[ ] [ ]

River:
[ ] [ ]
J_HasTheNuts shows a straight Nine high
Hero shows three of a kind Fives
J_HasTheNuts wins the pot (36 128) with a straight Nine high

I'm 65% to win this on the flop, and I gave him pot odds just short of that with my flop bet. I need to shove in that spot next time.

$6500 Guarantee Cash

Scored another MTT cash, this time in APs $25 buy-in $6500 Guarantee. I thought played pretty solid throughout, but made a couple mistakes once the bubble burst that cost me a shot at going much deeper.

In one hand, I called a short stack's ep raise with QT in the big blind, and when I missed I decided to bet at the flop, to which the short stack obviously shoved. I shook my head in disgust at my dumb play and folded. That cut my stack down a bit, and what killed me was letting that diminished stack dwindle down to the point where it become inconsequential.

I ended up shoving about 5 blinds or so into a raise holding 33. The raiser turned up KK and I didn't catch any miracles. I should have made some moves sooner, when my short stack still had some weight. Live and learn!

Nothing exciting to report from any cash game sessions, other than the fact that I've twice been asked by Cardrunners members whether I am one of them. I'm currently not but I guess I must be doing something right. ;)

MTT Hotstreak Ends

I went deep in another MTT, this time the 20k guarantee $11 on Stars. I finished 148th in the 3196-man field after taking a couple sick beats to send me home.

Here are the last few significant hands of the tourney:

Hand 1: 1000/2000

Seat #2 is the button
Seat 1: Jopazo (10522 in chips)
Seat 4: Hero (29778 in chips)
-- ante posts of 200 clipped

Hero : posts big blind 2000

RAISE Jopazo, 8322 to 10322 and is all-in
FOLD Nortoneal
FOLD BADARSE888
CALL Hero , 8322

Thoughts on this call:
  • I'll still have 20.5BBs if I lose, so I won't really be crippled
  • Villain is shoving lots of mid-pairs, lots of weak aces. I'm thinking I'm probably a coinflip to win here most of the time, and I'm getting over 2-to-1 from the pot so I made the call.
  • Stoving this with villain having a range of {22+,A5s+,KTs+,QTs+,A5o+,KTo+,QTo+} puts me at 43% to win. Is that range too generous?
  • Maybe not the greatest call in hindsight but I'm willing to gamble a bit at this point.

Pretty nasty result for the shorty.

Yikes. I'm 53% to win this, with the AK at 32.6% and the KJ at 14%. Pretty nasty beat! I'm back down to about 20 BBs so still not too worried.

Hand 3: 1000/2000
I pick up rockets on the button and it gets folded around. I raise it up to 8000, hoping for some action since I'd just played those two big pots. No luck however; my AA just picks up the antes and blinds.

This open-shove really took me by surprise. Villain has shown that he's not a very strong player and his shove really screamed "I don't know how to play this hand so I'm just gonna shove!". After some thought I made the call.

Pretty nasty there. Had I doubled through I would have had a comfortable 30 BBs! Oh well.
